Phil Hellmuth Remembers an Iconic Poker Game with Matt Damon and Edward Norton

Phil Hellmuth, known as “The Poker Brat,” recently shared a nostalgic post on social media about a legendary poker game he played with Matt Damon, Edward Norton, and other stars.

As one of the best poker players in the world, Hellmuth often looks back on his golden years when he dominated the Las Vegas tables. In his latest post, he shared a video from a friendly poker game featuring Damon and Norton, the stars of the classic film Rounders, which has inspired a generation of poker players.

The video is from 1998, the same year Rounders was released. It’s unclear whether the game was filmed on set or if Hellmuth was invited to join a private game with the crew. What’s clear from the video is that everyone had a great time.

In his post, Hellmuth wrote: “Cool clip with Matt Damon, Edward Norton, and me playing poker in 1998! Matt busted me! Great look for me: no cap, no black and gold outfit. Old school!”

At the beginning of the video, Hellmuth enters the room amid laughter, saying, “Wait a minute. I thought this was a table full of actors and writers. What’s going on here?” In the next scene, he sits to the left of Norton and announces, “I’m all-in! I have 3,525” while pushing his chips into the center. The only player to call his all-in was Matt Damon, causing excitement among the group. “Did you call me? Oh no! I’m embarrassed by that hand,” Hellmuth joked as he revealed his cards.

Although the video quality makes it hard to see everyone’s hands or the board, it’s easy to guess that “Mike McD” managed to defeat Hellmuth. In the final scene, Hellmuth approaches Damon for a hug. After parting, Matt jokes, “Now he’s going to ask me to play for real money.” Amid laughter and camaraderie, Hellmuth bids farewell to the table.
